Created by UNESCO, April 30 is officially the International Jazz Day. The aim is to highlight jazz and its diplomatic power of uniting people all over the world. After Turkey last year, today Osaka, Japan host this event.
“International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; and reinforce international cooperation and communication. Each year on April 30, this international art form is recognized for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity, and respect for human rights and human dignity; eradicating discrimination; promoting freedom of expression; fostering gender equality; and reinforcing the role of youth in enacting social change.”

ELLE: What’s the key to looking red-carpet ready?
Eva Mendes: Exercising helps me look and feel great on the red carpet. When I’m in shape, I feel more confident and people really notice that. It also keeps your body and skin looking healthy.
ELLE: How do you stay fit?
EM: I try to do something every day. I love walking and hiking (in my Reebok EasyTones). I also love running, I ran track in high school and I’m still pretty good at it. And I do some light weights to complement my cardio work.
ELLE: What keeps you motivated?
EM: I keep switching my exercise routine and that helps me stay motivated. I love trying new activities and being outdoors. I also enjoy good food – pasta, Cuban food, chocolate – and that’s another great motivation to get out and exercise.
ELLE: Your diet includes…
EM: A lot of fruit and vegetables – I try to always have some around for a snack, in case I get hungry. I also love grilled fish – especially salmon.
ELLE: And your indulgences?
EM: I don’t believe in denying myself anything and it’s no secret that I love chocolate. But for the most part, I have a healthy balanced diet, so if I indulge, I don’t punish myself.
ELLE: How do you de-stress?
EM: I do yoga. I try to find time to meditate every morning to make sure I’m centred and focused. Exercising not only helps me stay fit mentally and physically, but is also a great stress buster.

The Gateway to Rann Resort, Kutch, lets you indulge in creature comforts even as you rack up karma points.
It takes a village to run the Gateway To Rann Resort. This rural retreat is skilfully managed by the gram panchayat of Dhordo village, which means that every visitor who checks in for a holiday is also contributing to sustainable local development. On the fringes of the Great Rann of Kutch in the Thar Desert, this retreat is the perfect point from which to head out and explore this vast salt-laden landscape that gleams surreally under the right shafts of light.
Visit between October and April and you’ll witness the desert at its best – spotless, white, barren and beautiful in it vast emptiness. (If we didn’t know any better, we’d think this salt marsh was covered in a dense layer of frost.) Ask and you’ll find the hotel can even arrange for a camel safari – best to save that for the sunset
One of the perks of eating at this all-vegetarian hotel is discovering a certain home-cooked goodness in every meal. The hearty spread includes bajra na rotla (bread made of millet seeds) with a generous topping of ghee, and Kutchi khichdi-kadhi. Round off the meal with dudhpak (a confectionery made with thickened milk) or saffron shrikhand.
Cottage industry Stay in a bhunga, a traditional mud hut with a thatched roof. Splashes of colour find their way into your room through appliqué-detailed upholstery, and outside, you’ll find colourful paintings lining the walls. Venture out to pick up brightly embroidered handbags and mojris (characteristic of Banni, in Kutch) or take a long walk through the nearby bustling bazaars of Bhuj, known for their embroidered quilts and mirror work.

Keep your make-up sponges, puffs and brushes clean. Wash them with baby shampoo and cold water every seven days if you’re a regular make-up user. They should be reshaped, and then air-dried completely. Once dry, store in a closed container.
Cover your products. Keep lids on tightly and never leave products in the sun. A steady, cool temperature is best.
When you’re on the go, travel-size your make-up: A small amount of foundation or a lipstick cut into pieces can be carried in tiny containers.
All oil-based make-up should live in the fridge (lipsticks, foundations, concealers). And the rest in a cool, dry place, out of the bathroom and out of the sun. Varying temperatures reduce the longevity of a product.
Change your mascara every six to nine months. When it gets dry and flaky, discard it. Also, swirl your mascara wand in the tube instead of pumping it to keep from getting more air inside.
Get rid of your foundation when it starts to disintegrate or when you see the oil and the product separating. Generally, foundations last for up to two years.
If you accidentally crack your pressed powder, try using moisturizer to glue the powder back together.
Avoid using water directly on any make-up product.
Do not share your personal make-up with others. It is as good (or bad) as sharing your toothbrush.
